When fires spontaneously start-up around you, when you hear growling coming from underneath your bed, and you no longer recognize your face in the mirror. What happens then?Ghost-hunter Perry Palomino doesn’t have much time to find out. Now, the evil she used to hunt is a lot closer to home. It’s inside of her, taking over her life bit-by-terrifying bit, and there’s only one person who can help her.

If part of her doesn’t kill him first.

Review:

I want to first say that I really do enjoy this series! Each book just keeps getting better and better as far as fur raising terror is concerned. Halle definitely knows how to spin a wonderful horror story!

This book, which takes place shortly after the events of Lying Season, book 4 in the series, played on a goodly number of my fears and there was a moment where I almost couldn’t keep reading because I was so scared. Can I just say that thanks to Halle I will never be able to go near a bathtub ever again! ~shivers~ Yes, normally cats don’t like baths, but I do enjoy sitting next to the tub every once in a while just to feel the steam as it rises off the water. Well, I use to enjoy it. Sigh

In truth this is a hard review to write because I’m afraid to say too much for fear of spoilers. And we all know I can’t stand spoilers. Murr! What I can say is, this book definitely delves into the realm of psychological mind games. It raises the question, is everything that’s been going on really the result of ghosts or is it all in Perry’s mind? Just what is real and what is imagined? Unfortunately, I can’t answer these questions because I’m not entirely sure of the answers. The only thing I know for certain is that this book, like all the others, will send chills down your spine.

It was great to see some of my favorite characters return in this book. Maximus and Bird, from Red Fox, are back to help Perry deal with the newest crisis in her life. I love both of these guys, and while Maximus does do some things which make it hard for me to trust him completely, his Southern charm still makes me smile. As far as Bird goes, he is still very much like a grandfather figure to me. =^.^= Likewise I was impressed by how big a part Perry’s parents and sister, Ada, had in this book. No longer are they all relegated to the sidelines. The events in this book impact everyone in the Palomino household and no one is left unscathed.

Now, before you all start to ask, yes Dex makes an appearance in this book, though not until well close to the end. I must say that I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this. Part of me was sad to see that he wasn’t as major a character in this book, and yet another part of me was rather glad that he wasn’t around much, especially after what all happened in the previous book. I’ll admit that I’ve always had my doubts about him, but it just didn’t seem right to not have him around a whole lot. When I think of Experiment in Terror, he’s a big part of it. But like I said, after what happened in the last book, I really have to wonder if things aren’t going to be better with him not being in the picture as much.

Speaking of Lying Season, if you think the ending to that one was a surprise, just wait until you get to the end of this book! Honestly, I couldn’t believe what happened. Halle has done a fantastic job setting things up for the sixth book in the series, and it’s just torture to think that fans will have to wait a while to find out what happens next! There are so many questions that still need to be answered and so many different paths that Halle can take Perry and Dex down. I’m really curious to see what she has planned for this series as it continues. I have to give full tail waves to Halle for a job well done with this book. Murr!
