Cameron’s Adventures in Book Lists Part One

This entry, and the one following it, will be talking about book lists. In particular, I’ll be talking about my adventures in keeping a yearly book list. Now why am I making this a topic for discussion? One reason is because since I started keeping track of the books I’ve read I’ve been able to see where my tastes run and also can easily recall whether I’ve read a book or not. Another reason is because it allows me to show my friends just how much I actually read on a yearly basis and provide them an opportunity to find books they may like. Now, I can’t promise that it will be an overly exciting blog entry, but for those of you considering keeping a list of your own, perhaps this will give you an idea of the in’s and out’s of listing.

Anyways, I first got the idea to keep a yearly book list when I was subbing for a friend of mine one year. She had a poster in her classroom which showed the number of books a person read equal to the amount of pages read per year. It was a pretty interesting poster and it got me thinking of just how many books I actually did read on average per year. I knew that I read a lot, but never thought to associate a number to my actual reading. Thus the keeping of a yearly book list began. Mind you, at the time when I started, the idea of how many pages I read yearly didn’t matter as much to me, though this has changed in recent years.

At this time I wish to say to readers to feel free to copy and paste any or all of my lists into a separate document to review titles at a later. I’ve read a vast range of genres and topics over the years, so there’s bound to be something for everyone to enjoy. 🐱

I began keeping a book list in 2006. My goal at the time was to keep it fairly simple, and I didn’t discriminate between novels and anime.

Like I said, my reading was all over the place when I first started listing. I could have counted each book in the anime series that I read as a separate entry, but chose not to because while they were books, I really didn’t see them as being countable “novels.” To this day, I still don’t typically count them in my book lists. I also began to question whether plays should be counted or not because of their general format. Regardless of my uncertainties, by the end of the year I at least had a base line number to work with as far as my amount of reading per year was concerned.

In 2007 and 2008 I changed my reading habits and as a result, my book lists took on a different appearance. I decided to take out graphic novels completely and replaced them with anthologies. The listing of anthologies created a whole new problem for me as each anthology had an editor and each story within the anthology had an author. I decided to tackle this problem by placing a symbol after each title and then have the authors listed separately at the end of the entire book list. In 2007 I used a different symbol for each anthology, but in 2008 I decided to just use one symbol repeated per anthology. I will honestly say that by the end of 2008 I wasn’t happy with either method of tracking.

So yeah, confusing much? That’s what I thought. Neither method of anthology tracking worked for me. Either they were too distracting or too cluttered. The other problem I had with these lists was for some books I included what series they were from and where they fell within the series, and with others I didn’t. At the time I thought it was a great idea, but I quickly realized that it was probably better to just keep it title/author and not inundate the list with added information. I figured that if folks were interested in the books, they could track down whether the titles were part of a series on their own.

And so, my first three attempts into the land of book listing were complete and by the end of 2008 I had a fairly good idea of what I felt worked and what didn’t. The basic format was there. Now it was time to have some fun!
